HURON HISTORICAL GAOL

The Huron Historic Gaol is a unique and imposing octagonal building which served as the County Jail from its opening in 1842 until 1972 when all inmates were transferred to regional facilites. The Gaol is a designated National Historic Site. The building originally housed the County Courts and Council Chambers, as well as serving as Gaol and House of Refuge. The Goal's architect was Thomas Young, and at the time of construction, was viewed as a model of humanitarian prison design. The Governor's House was built in 1901 in the area of one of the courtyards, and clearly illustrates the important status of this position within a rural Ontario community in the early part of this century. LAITHWAITE APPLE PARK

Laithwaite Apple Park farm near Goderich has fascinated visitors for four generations with its many sculptures fashioned from cement, metal, fieldstone and found materials by George Laithwaite (1873-1956). Some of his human figures were created as satirical or political commentary on world events, while others were based on comic strip characters. In 1945 George Laithwaite erected a stone coach house which served as his studio. Most of his statues were created as a hobby during slow economic times. The uniqueness and diversity of these statues has made Apple Park a local landmark. Visitors are welcome to view the statues on three acres of lawn, set among over 350 trees. Laithwaite Apple Park also offers a farm store selling seasonal products. Laithwaite Apple Park is located just east of Goderich on Highway #8.

MENESETUNG BRIDGE

The Menesetung Bridge was originally built as a C.P.R. railway bridge in 1907. At the time of its construction, it was the longest railway bridge in Ontario. Regular passenger and freight service continued on the line up to the 1970's. The last steam locomotive passed over the bridge in 1977, and the last diesel locomotive in 1988. The rail line between Guelph and Goderich was abandoned in 1989 and portions were converted to walking trails in 1992. The conversion of the bridge to a pedestrian walking bridge was made possible through the sale of planks and railings to local and area residents, thus many of the planks and railings are engraved with the names of these generous individuals and families. The Menesetung Bridge connects the Town of Goderich with the Tiger Dunlop Heritage Trail, the Maitland Trail and the Goderich to Auburn Rail Trail. The Bridge spans the Maitland River and offers and incredible view of the river, the Port of Goderich and Lake Huron. Menesetung Bridge Association, P.O. Box 443, Goderich, Ontario, N7A 4C7
